Housing Q and A   |  Contact Us

Living on campus will be a great way for you to experience American university life and to meet people from the U.S. and all over the world. The Department of Housing & Residential Life looks forward to providing you with the services, programs, and resources to make your stay at FIU exciting and vibrant.

You will be living in a new, comfortable, University dormitory building, sharing your room with other students from all over the world and in the same building used by American students taking regular University classes. Please send full payment and application for housing as early as possible. Housing for the Intensive Conversation Program and the Summer Institute Program are subject to space availability.

Housing Q & A

Q. Where are the dormitories?
A.
The dormitories are right on campus and close to the ELI.

Q. Are the dormitories comfortable?
A.
Yes, but remember that these are University dormitories, not apartments or suites in a hotel. You will experience the real American university dormitory life!

Q. What do I need to take to the dormitory?
A.
As a rule, American students know that when they are ready to leave home for the university dormitories they have to take with them a pillow, pillowcases, sheets and towels. All these are known as linen. Since you are coming to an American university dormitory, you should do the same, or you may wait to arrive in the US and buy your linen here. The English Language Institute staff will be happy to provide you with the names of stores nearby where you can buy inexpensive linen.

Q. What is the size of the mattress in my dormitory room?
A.
In University Park Towers, Everglades Hall and Panther Hall, mattresses are 36 inches x 80 inches x 6 inches (extra long). (91.44 centimeters x 203.2 centimeters x 15.24 centimeters)

Q. Can the University provide linen?
A.
No, you are responsible for your linen.

Q. Where can I wash my clothes?
A.
The dormitory building has coin-operated washing machines in designated areas, where students can wash their clothes.

Q. Are electricity and water included in the price?
A.
Yes, but you may be charged for excessive consumption, or as a result of increases in rates.

Q. Are there social activities in the dormitories?
A.
Yes, in fact, there are many social activities and you should participate in as many as possible to practice your English.

Q. Are males and females together?
A.
No, males and females are separated. They live in the same building, but in different dormitory suites.

Q. Where can I eat?
A.
There is a big, modern cafeteria, a medium-sized diner, and a food court. There are also many fast-food restaurants across the street from campus.

Q. Can I get a meal plan?
A.
Yes, you can get a meal plan by contacting the University Catering Services upon your arrival on campus. The residence halls will also provide information on meal plans.
